Messerschmitt Me 209. Der Weg zum schnellsten Propellerflugzeug der Welt

Messerschmitt Me 209. Der Weg zum schnellsten Propellerflugzeug der Welt
Spring of 1939, German pilots do the impossible, they win the world speed record. For three decades, the industrialized nations France, England, Italy and the United States fought for that glory, now Germany has taken the lead. In 1939 two German pilots in airplanes of German engineers accomplish this superior performance: In March, Hans Dieterle in a Heinkel He 100 in April and Fritz Wendel in a Messerschmitt Me 209. It still should be the absolute last propeller-driven aircraft with established world records. A few months later, World War II breaks out. Both pilots fly as test pilots the most advanced propeller and jet aircraft, and both survived the war. Both world record machines come into museums, but only one of them survived, albeit in fragments, the fastest ever, the Me 209. This thoroughly and richly illustrated book tells from this Messerschmitt Me 209 V1, the last propeller-world-record-breaking machine, the first of its kind. It also describes the wishes and plans, the design and construction, test flights, the discouraging failures, and finally the triumph at the very last second. With 132 b/w pictures, technical drawings and documents.
