The use of bicycles in the military had two decisive advantages: They were much cheaper than motorized vehicles or horses and they made far less noise. Initially only used as a military courier vehicle, entire cycling troops were eventually formed, mobilizing parts of the infantry. Barbara Maiwald documents how the bicycle conquered the world of the military in Germany. She describes his tasks and missions in everyday war life, describes the bicycle models and their manufacturers, and lists the weapons that belonged to the various bicycles.
With 220 pictures (most of them in b/w, some colour pictures from today), tables of organization of units (=Kriegsstärkennacheisungen KStN).
