In his detailed memoirs, Wilhelm Hartung, an artillery officer, tells of the experiences of the simple frontline soldier. He describes openly and honestly the horrors of the great material battles in which he acquired both classes of the Iron Cross. He vividly describes the horror scare of the gas war, the carnage in the trenches, as well as the silent death of the unknown soldier. The memories of this artillery officer take the reader out into the great battles on the Western Front of the First World War, in which death was a constant companion.
