With rifles against tanks: When the British introduced a new weapon with their tanks on the battlefields of the First World War in 1916, the infantry could do little to counter the "steel monsters". The German War Ministry responded with mauser's anti-tank rifle.
This was followed by a development towards ever larger and heavier anti-tank rifles, until they were replaced by recoilless anti-tank handguns. But in the 1980s, the concept experienced a renewal with the modern anti-material rifles.
