The "Kommando Bienenstock" undoubtedly can be described as one of the last commandos of the German Air Force in the Second World War. But even before that, the desperate actions of the "Kommando Elbe" – also referred to in the literature as "Rammkommando Elbe" – attempted to compensate for the material inferiority of the German Air Force in the final phase of the Second World War by bringing down the Allied bombers by ramming in the air.
Even if the chance of survival of the German pilots was only small, at that time there was deliberately no mention of a self-sacrifice mission.
Of the approximately 2,000 volunteers who had volunteered for such missions, 300 were selected for the missions.
The task of the predominantly young pilots was to attack enemy columns of tanks with light aircraft, predominantly Bücker Bü 181, to whose wings bazookas were attached.
But other actions also were planned. For example, on the Italian peninsula.
