The Royal Canadian Air Force, together with the Army and Navy of Canada, forms an integrated part of the Canadian Armed Forces, whose commander-in-chief is currently the British King Charles III, who is represented in this function by the Governor General. The primary mission of the Canadian Armed Forces, currently numbering 12,000 soldiers, is to protect Canada's territorial integrity, secure its airspace and support political and military alliances, most notably NATO.
Part 1 of this two-part book traces the history of the Canadian Air Force from the first flights of a Canadian balloon in 1840 to the Starfighter era of the early 1980s.
