The Lehrgeschwader 1 - one of the oldest Units of the former german Luftwaffe - saw action on all european battlefields; it flew its last sorties in April of 1945 near the river Oder. The focus of its actions however saw the units's employment in the Mediteranean. There, it's crews were respectfully called the Helbig-Flyers" by the units british opponents, reffering to Joachim Helbig one of its most succesfull leaders.
The present volume of the chronicle contains information about the peace-time, it's actions in Poland, Norway, in the West and against Britain. Followed by chapters about it's actions from January 1941 in the South against the british fleet in the Mediteranean and the british held harbors, in the Balkans and against Creete, as well it's support of the german troops led by Rommel in northern Africa. Volume 1 ends with the raids on the isle-fortress of Malta in the spring of 1942.
