The Lehrgeschwader 1 - one of the oldest Units of the former German Luftwaffe - saw action on all european battlefields; it flew its last sorties in April of 1945 near the river Oder. The focus of its actions however saw the units's employment in the Mediteranean. There, its crews were respectfully called the "Helbig-Flyers" by the units british opponents, referring to Joachim Helbig one of its most succesfull leaders.
The present volume of the chronicle contains information about the fighting of this unit in the mediterranean (from 1942 onwards) and the fall of Tobruk, the raids against El Alamein, the loss of Africa, the actions of the 3rd group in the east, the fighting against the allied invasion of Sicily and Anzio, the last fighting in the Mediterranean, the invasion of the Normandy, the fighting in opt. "Wacht am Rhein", at the Oder-Front, as well as in the last days of the war.
