The introduction describes the history of the Guards (of different nations) and their importance. Following this is a historical overview concerning the "Leibgarden" (including the "k. u. Kronwache"). Each Guard is introduced with its history, its position within the Guards, as well as its importance as representation- , protection- and education facility (this includes a list with its leaders` names). The book shows dayly life at court and in the field. Most pages of the book cover the uniforms within a space of 400 years. All details concerning them are described. A further chapter demonstrates all thinkable kind of Guard-dublications, they reach from brass-figures of all scale, to postcards and caricatures. The book contains all in all 550 illustrations, mostly in colour. It closes with a detailed list of literature concerning the subject.
The author has also published a series concerning the equipment, armament and the uniforms of the austrian army of the 1st and 2nd republic.
