In this book, the author describes his service as a young German WW2 soldier, introduced into the Wehrmacht in 1943 as a volunteer as so many of his fellows. His story begins on D-Day, that day, he fought against the Americans at Omaha-Beach and made horrible experiences. Following the retreat through France, he and a comrade, now war weary, decided to desert, but where taken prisoner and sentencee to death, but had the chance to prove themselves in Bewährungsbattaillon 500, a suicide mission-bataillon, which saw service at the Eastern Front in the last weeks of the war. There he was taken prisoner and spent many horrible years in Soviet imprisonment.
