Volume III of the 'Battle Colors' series focuses on the unit and tactical aircraft markings of the Ninth U.S. Army Air Force in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. For readers unfamiliar with its history a brief synopsis of the evolution of the Ninth AAF from inception to V-E Day is also included in this volume. All combat elements assigned to the Ninth AAF in the UK between 16 October 1943 and 8 May 1945 are included in this work which covers Fighter, Troop Carrier, Bombardment, and Reconnaissance Groups in addition to Night Fighter and Liaison Squadrons. A great deal of research has gone into presenting as many squadron insignia as possible, both official as as unofficial versions, Squadron fuselage codes and recognition colors are addressed within their respective sections and include maps showing the chronological listing and dates of each units assigned stations from pre-invasion England to Western Europe at wars end.
