Between 1982 and 1986 hundreds of workers and thousands of construction soldiers built a four-kilometer long ferry port with 120 kilometers of railway tracks at Mukran near Sassnitz (island Rügen) for two billion dollars. That was the biggest traffic-project in the German Democratic Republic. Five giant double-decker ferries with broad gauge tracks now were handling most of the freight traffic with the Soviet Union from here, so that a time-consuming and costly transit through Poland was avoided. It now also was possible to transport dangerous military stuff across the Baltic Sea unnoticed from not wanted people. Inside the ferries they had secret crew quarters for 300 soldiers. With 119 pictures and 4 maps.
