The Ebersdorf Ship's Model of 1400

The Ebersdorf Ship\'s Model of 1400
Since the identification of a late medieval votive offering in the Collegiate Church of Ebersdorf near Chemnitz as a precise replica of a Northern European seagoing ship of that period and the publication of the results of initial investigations in 1981 and 1983, a counterpart has been known to the Mataró Model, previously thought to be the only extant ship’s model dating from the period around 1500.
For three decades now, the Ebersdorf ship’s replica – which is on a par with the model from Mataró near Barcelona with regard to its significance for both cultural history and the history of shipbuilding – has been firmly an - chored in specialist maritime literature.
This has led to numerous calls for further investigations, the model’s precise measurement, and the sketches carried out subsequently. What is more, regret has often been voiced among the experts about the fact that the publication of 1983 never appeared in English as well. All the necessary work has meanwhile been completed and the results of the wood and caulk analyses are now available. On that basis, and in the context of the marinearcheological finds made since the 1980s and the advanced state of knowledge in this field, a detailed, up-to-date bilingual publication of the Late medieval ship’s model in the Ebersdorf Collegiate Church can finally be presented.
