"Our future lies on the water, "announced William II in 1898. Under the auspices of Admiral Alfred von Tirpitz, a fleet was built, which was the pride of the Empire. Germany, which til then was a continental power should become a sea power. During the First world War, this hope was destroyed. Due to the British blockade strategy, the gigantic capital ships were hardly used. Especially the officers were deeply disappointed. To rescue the supposedly lost honor a plan for a last great decisive battle against the Royal Navy was created in 1918. The sailors, who refused to obey orders, marked the beginning of the revolution in Germany. The fleet was interned in the English naval port of Scapa Flow. The fleet sunk itself in June 1919.
