The Avro Type 679 Manchester was one of a new breed of heavy bombers including the Short Stirling and Handley Page Halifax that re-equipped RAF Bomber Command in the early years of the war. The Manchester will always be looked upon as a flawed aeroplane but this was due primarily to the failure of its Rolls-Royce Vulture powerplant. When its engines were running properly the Manchester provided a new and very capable aircraft for the Command, giving the service a faster aircraft, and one which could carry a much heavier bomb load, than any previous British twin-engine bomber. The famous four-engine Lancaster was developed from the Manchester but before that aircraft entered service the Manchester would fill an important gap. It served for almost three years and makes a worthy subject for this latest title in the Warpaint series.
