In 1943 the tank battalion 103 under the command of Major Haen was equipped with assault guns III and fought in Italy against the Americans.
During his time as commander he wrote a detailed war diary, which allows many interesting insights into training, organization, operational tactics and the combats of the unit.
Major Haen was decorated with the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross and was carrier of the armored badge with the application number "100" .
